Hi! My name is Vicki Koersen.

This is my second year at DAF as the Learning Commons Facilitator. You will also find me in the office during part of the day helping as secretary.

I love being part of the school community and have spent most of my career working in education. The students are energizing and nothing stays the same, so you never quite know what is going to happen day to day 😀

Admittedly, this is my first time blogging, so thank you for joining me on this new journey. My hope is that I can share some of the amazing books we have here in the Learning Commons and hopefully encourage you to try something new to read. You never know...you might find a new favourite!

Books new to the DAF LC this fall!

Vet Volunteers-Storm Rescue (student recommended)

Sunita Patel is book smart and good with cats. When a hurricane approaches, Sunita realizes that Lucy, a diabetic cat with a broken leg, is in danger, along with her owner, Mrs. Clark. When the vets are called out on emergency, the evacuation starts. Will Sunita be able to save Lucy or will she be a scaredy-cat?

For those looking for lacrosse books I have just brought in 3 new books by Jake Maddox. I know we have a big group of students playing lacrosse that attend our school.

Eager to follow in his father's footsteps, Ramon Hill wants nothing more than to be a starting attacker on his lacrosse team. But his dreams don't go as planned, and he's moved to a different position. Playing as a midfielder lets Ramon put his skills and talent to best use, but he can't help but feel disappointed. Will his new position lead to bigger and better things for him and his team?

For those who love graphic novels... the Maximum Ride Series. We now have the series from 1-9.

Follow fourteen-year-old Maximum Ride who knows what it''s like to soar above the world. She and all the members of her "flock" - Fang, Iggy, Nudge, Gasman, and Angel - are just like ordinary kids, except they have wings and can fly! It may seem like a dream come true to some, but for the flock it''s more like a living nightmare. When the mysterious lab known as the "School" turns up and kidnaps their youngest member, it's up to Max to organize a rescue, but will help come in time?

And for the more mature readers... Book #2 in the Tokyo Ever After series.

When the Imperial Household Council refuses to approve the marriage of her parents, eighteen-year-old Izumi decides to become the perfect princess to help win the council's consent, but will she sacrifice her own heart in order to secure her parents' happiness?

November is a time to learn more about Remembrance Day and the history around the World Wars. Veterans' Week is November 5-11 and gives us an opportunity to honour the extraordinary efforts and sacrifices of our veterans and those who continue to serve. Remembrance Day on November 11th marks the final day of Veterans' Week and recalls the end of hostilities during the First World War on that date in 1918.

Look in the Learning Commons for more books and stories about those events.
Maybe we can share one of yours?

Happy Reading!

Vicki
